13 things for Istanbul

In XIX century Orthodox monk Filofej from city of Pskov equaled Moscow to the Third Rome. “First and second Rome fell; now Moscow is the Third and the last Rome”. I been moving backwards in time. I was (luckily:) born in the third Rome, last November managed to visit the second Rome aka Constantinople aka Istanbul, while the Rome Rome is still on my short list of places to visit. Here I publish selected photos from the three days trip along with my recommendations.

Top 13 things to do for those visiting Istanbul
1. прокатиться по Босфору от Средиземного до Черного моря на теплоходе. можно с туристами, но намного интереснее – на рейсовом
ride passenger ferry along Bosporus


2. посетить крытый рынок. будьте готовы – этот гигант сожрет как минимум пол-дня и не поперхнется
visit Grand Bazaar. it will eat at least half-day of your time
3. спуститься в подземную цистерну и, если повезет, послушать там камерный оркестр
step down into underground Yerebatan Cistern and if you are lucky catch a classical concert
4. забраться на Галатскую башню и обозреть окрестности. сделать сразу же по приезде, чтобы сориентироваться куда вы попали

eat in a small local cafe
6. прогуляться по ночной Istiklal до площади Taksim и вернуться на трамвайчике

8. купить дубленку в Лалели – необъятном квартале кожи, мехов и одежды
buy fur coat in Laleli which is horrendous cluster of shops dealing in fur, leather and general clothing
9. проникнуть в Голубую Мечеть во время намаза и вместе с другими неверными из-за перегородки наблюдать за процессом
sneak into Blue Mosque during service and observe the procedure from behind infidel fence
10. выпить кофе с турецкими сладостями на крыше одной из гостиниц старого города с видом на Золотой Рог и Босфор
have cup of coffee on the roof of one of hotels of the Old City and enjoy incredible view of Bosporus and Golden Horn
11. заглянуть в гостиницу Pera Palace и ощутить атмосферу доброго колониального отеля. Агата Кристи, инспектор Пуаро, Восточный экспресс. кстати неплохая гостиница – я в ней и остановился. один лифт чего стоит!

12. отдохнуть, посмотреть телевизор и попить чаю в одном из невероятного множества мужских кафе

13. напоследок пропариться в хамаме – турецкой бане
wash away city dust and tiredness in Hamam or Turkish bath
